What Does 10 Free Mean?
Zoya have eliminated 10 of the most toxic ingredients from their nail polishes!

These harmful substances can be absorbed into the skin, and can cause awfully unpleasant side effects. Even when the quantity is low, it's better to avoid these nasties completely.
These ingredients are:
01
Formeldehyde
A strong-smelling, colourless gas used as a germicide, fungicide, disinfectant and preservative. This chemical can cause skin irritation, nausea and allergic reactions such as dermatitis, potentially leading to an itchy, red rash and blisters. Even more concerning, Formaldehyde is also linked to causing some cancers. We'd rather not chance it.
03
Dibutyl Phthalate
Commonly used as a solvent and plasticiser to provide a shiny finish. However, it’s effects aren't so ‘shiny’
In both Europe and the United States, phthalates are listed as a suspected endocrine disruptor, and could interfere with normal hormone function. So it can affect fertility, and can cause birth defects. Not to stop there it can also cause health issues such as liver and kidney failure in young children. Avoid!
05
TPHP
A chemical compound used as a flame retardant and plasticiser to increase durability and flexibility in nail polish. That being said, this isn’t a chemical we’re willing to be flexible on. Triphenyl Phosphate is associated with having effects on your hormones, in particular, reproductive health.

07
Xylene
Xylene is a solvent often used in nail polishes for its thinning properties which prevents lumps in the finished formula. Some proven side effects are skin and eye irritation, nausea, headaches and dizziness.
09
Ethyl Tosylamide
Quick-drying nail polish is all the rage but the chemical responsible for this instant result has been forbidden across Europe. Ethyl Tosylamide has been linked to antibiotic resistance, a side-effect that does not outweigh the benefit of having a chip-free polish.
02
Formaldehyde Resin
A polymer commonly used in many nail enamel products as it is a soft resin material that forms the shiny and tough film in polishes. While that sounds great, it’s certainly one to avoid as it may cause dermatitis and other unfavourable skin irritations.
04
Toluene
A compound found in petroleum and the tolu-tree, working as a solvent to help form a smooth finish. Present in paints, varnishes, glues and many, many nail polishes, inhalation of Toluene can result in headaches, dizziness, drowsiness and vomiting. Prolonged use of Toulene can dry out the skin, causing it to crack and peel. Not an ingredient you want to be around.
06
Camphor
A waxy, flammable solid found in the wood of the Camphor Laurel Tree within the East Asian region. This acts as a plasticiser within many nail polishes to add shine and elasticity and in very small doses camphor can cause reactions such as a really fast heartbeat, skin vasodilation (flushed skin - we often get this with alcohol), slowed breathing, nausea, headaches, dizziness and disorientation. and increased perspiration. In large doses it is very toxic.
Parabens
08
Parabens are a widely used preservative in cosmetic products and prevent unwanted growth of mould and bacteria. As fantastic as this may seem for your collection, it’s not so fantastic for you. Parabens are suspected to increase the risk of breast and skin cancer. Definitely best kept out of your routine.
10
Lead
Lead is a potential impurity in many color cosmetics. Lead is a well-known and proven neurotoxin that has been linked to learning, language and behavioral problems.
